Do you remember the way the System Folder used to automatically move files dropped on to it into their correct subfolders?

Using AppleScript you can get that functionality back in Mac OS X 10.2

All you need to do is to attach a specific Script to your Library folder(s).

Your library can auto-sort the following file-types:

  • Screen Savers
  • System Preferences Panes
  • Services
  • Compiled AppleScripts
  • FrameWorks
  • Scripting Additions
  • AIFF Sounds
  • TrueType Fonts
  • dFonts Fonts
  • otFonts
  • Keynote Themes
  • ColorSync Profiles
  • Unsanity Application Enhancer modules
  • Saved Terminal Window Settings

It will work both in the User Library (the one in your Home Directory) and the Local Library (the computer-wide Library). I have not tested the script on a Mac OS X Server Network Library - I don't have access to one.

n.b. Do not attach this to the /system/library - you should never alter that library.

There are three ways to attach the script:

1 - (Easy Install)
Download and run the following installation script (this script will download the LibrarySorter script, move it to the 'Folder Action Scripts' directory in your user library and attach it to the Libraries of your choice)

2 - (Manual Install)
Download the LibrarySorter script and attach it to your Library manually using the script menu. (/Applications/AppleScript/Script Menu.menu)
Choose "Enable Folder Actions" and "Attach Script to Folder" from the "Folder Actions" menu of the Script Menu

3 - (SuperGeeky install)
Only for users of Apple's Script Editor 2 Beta - the default version of Script Editor on Jaguar is 1.9

Select all the text on this page and Press Command * (Command Shift 8)

This is the same script as option 1 - but you execute the script directly from the browser via a service rather than downloading then executing a stand-alone app.

Library Sorter is freeware.
