I'm not sure if they will offer HD to Sky+ existing subscribers first - they must subsidise the Sky+ boxes already sold, and there's no guarantee that people who are interested in PVR stuff will automatically want HD.

I do find downloading stuff off the net useful and Sky+ can't record retroactively (i.e. if you've forgotten to record something) - but Sky+ live TV functionality is becoming harder and harder to resist: it's such a nice user experience.

I know what you mean about sounding like your dad  - but I shelled out a grand for my Sony Wega five years ago - and its still working perfectly. It's not like a powerbook or something which will actually feel slower and cramped for disc space in five years.

It wasn't really changing my TV/Sky box that I was afeared of - I just didn't want to get stuck in a middle ground - where I'd have to get new kit again in a couple of years time.

e.g. I'll want a new A/V amp with HDMI in/out - I'm not sure of they are even available in the UK for sensible prices yet. It's like minidisc all over again - I wanted it in 1995 - but no one else seemed to - and the tech was new - so all the players were huge and expensive - wait a bit until the market has settled down and you get better kit cheaper.

Sky are totally in control of HD in the UK - and so until they came out with firm specs, buying any HD display was obsolescence-risky (in my opinion.)

You sound like my Dad… “I knew I was right to go with Radio Rentals. Why buy a TV when everything will have changed so much in 10 years? Much easier to pay £20 per month and stick with this one – I mean who needs more than 11″, and anyway it’s good for you to get up off your backside and use the tuning wheel.”

Oh – and don’t you reckon they are going to give their Sky+ subscribers first bite at the cherry given that they have already proven themselves to be value-added subscribers and early-adopters

(Actually, why don’t you just watch all your TV over your new SuperJANET 1Tb/sec fatband connection and do away with all of Murdoch’s profiteering?)
